Linear Shaft Tolerance Is Only Part of the Fit

Measure more than diameter
Diameter matters, but so do straightness, surface condition, local wear and shaft support. A bearing replacement should not hide a damaged shaft.
What to inspect
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Diameter | Measure at several positions and directions. |
| Surface | Look for scoring, rust, dents and abrasive contamination. |
| Straightness | Especially important on long unsupported shafts. |
| Support | Loose or misaligned supports can change the shaft path. |
| Mating convention | Use the fit specified for the selected family and configuration. |
